What happens when you release a brand new operating system chock full of impressive updates, powerful new functionality and price it at an affordable $20? You sell more than 3 million copies within the first week.
Just as many had predicted, Apple announced the release of their new Mac OS during their Q3 earnings call last Tuesday. The following day, Mountain Lion leapt into the Mac App Store, accessible from any Mac running the latest 2 versions of OS X.
Within the first 2 days of availability, Apple managed to sell 2 million copies to Mac users the world over.
Today, Apple is announcing more than 3 million copies sold and downloaded in just 4 days.
“Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a statement.
Apple is offering Mountain Lion through the Mac App Store exclusively and will not be offering a physical disc or USB stick containing the OS. A one time purchase of Mountain Lion allows users to install the latest OS on up to 5 machines, and those who have recently purchased a Mac—on or after June 11—will be able to upgrade their machines for free.
